Knowing is Half the Battle

For today’s geography lesson, here’s a map of the Middle East and western Asia.

Afghanistan, a country with which we will all be very familiar in the near future, is outlined. I knew it was nested somewhere in all those republics and whatnot, but I thought I’d put it up here for reference.

As a quick factoid, Pakistan—Afghanistan’s neighbor to the southwest—was a strong ally of ours during the Cold War. Francis Gary Powers, made famous by the 1960 U-2 Incident, began his flight in Peshawar, Pakistan (between Islamabad and the Afghanistan border) before he was shot down over the U.S.S.R en route to Norway.
